Socio-economic support

Background

The Energy Act 2004 outlined an obligation on the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) to consider the socio-economic impacts of its activities on local communities.

Magnox’s socio-economic approach

Magnox is committed to providing and enabling socio-economic support for the communities in which it operates.

A new Magnox socio-economic plan, developed to take into account the impacts of decommissioning related to the Magnox Optimised Decommissioning Programme (MODP), was produced and agreed in 2011. The MODP represents a major change to the work programme across Magnox requiring an assessment of the socio-economic implications for local communities in-line with the requirements of the Energy Act 2004 to mitigate the effects of decommissioning on the surrounding communities and develop opportunities for socio-economic development.

This has led to the development of a new single Magnox socio-economic scheme, which works in partnership with the NDA and EnergySolutions to fund projects in neighbouring communities.  Nationally the NDA has £10 million to support socio-economic development across its estate. This combined with a substantial donation from EnergySolutions provides around £1 million for socio-economic development at Magnox sites. The scheme also has pull-down funding available from the NDA for larger schemes which will be assesed on the quality and level of the application.

A new web based portal where community organisations can apply for funding launched on 02 April 2012. This replaces all existing Magnox, NDA and EnergySolutions sponsorship and socio-economic funding arrangements for Magnox sites.
