Magnox, owned by EnergySolutions, is the management and operations contractor responsible for ten nuclear sites and one hydroelectric plant in the UK, working for the sites’ owner, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
Our work is as diverse as it is challenging, ranging from electricity generation through to defuelling sites at the end of generation and the introduction of innovative techniques to accelerate decommissioning and clean-up. We have outlined a number of strategic goals which will mark our progress along the route to safely delivering our sites into care and maintenance.
Our phases of work
During generation Magnox will maximise electricity generation while ensuring continued excellent performance in nuclear safety and operations.Find out more
Reactors, cooling ponds and fuel cells containing used fuel are emptied, and the fuel is transferred off-site for reprocessing. Redundant plant can also be removed.Find out more
During this phase hazards are reduced, buildings are deplanted and demolished. Waste is managed and maintenance requirements minimised.

The site is maintained in a passively safe and secure state while radiation levels are left to decay naturally.
This is the last stage in a site’s lifecycle with the removal of reactor vessels and building demolition. Sites will be declassified as nuclear licensed sites.

The delivery of our work programmes
Although each of our sites is different, the core challenges remain the same, so tackling work consistently helps drive value and innovation.
To do this, Magnox organises decommissioning projects into defined programmes across sites to deliver safe, efficient and fit for purpose solutions. This allows us to tackle hazard reduction in a safe and consistent way across all of our ten sites.
